Christopher Lincoln Inspires - The Nameless Octopus

THIS CHALLENGE IS NOW CLOSED. Your generous donations this round helped us raise $146 for Great Lakes Bengal Rescue. As we did not meet our $250 target, the recipient of Mr. Lincoln's doodle has been selected from a random drawing of contributors and donors to this challenge: and the lucky winner is Amy Powell! Congratulations Amy, and many thanks to all the artists and generous folks who helped to support this effort!

It's time for the next link in our chain of inspiration! This round's guest artist, Billy Bones author Christopher Lincoln, invites you to find this fellow's name, and his story:

We asked Chris why art, and the making of art, is important to him:

"Here are my top three reasons:

1. It makes me smile

2. It keeps me in touch with my ten-year-old self, which happens to be the most creative part of my brain.

3. It makes others smile."

For this challenge, we want to hear from your ten-year-old self. Who or what is the nameless octopus? What is its story? Why is it nameless? What is its name? Will it ever have one? Give us your answer in a piece of art, using any form you wish. Write a story, write a poem, write a song. Draw something, paint something, sculpt something, knit something. What does the doodle bring out in you? Give it form, then show it to us!

THE RULES: The name of the game is collaborative conversation. We seek creative responses inspired by the piece, not derivative works. Only original artwork will be accepted. Any genre, medium, or form is fine, but it must be all your own work. No part, portion, or sample of Mr. Lincoln's doodle may be used in your submitted piece; derivative works will be considered ineligible for submission.

WHERE TO SUBMIT: nightgardensubmissions@verizon.net

WHAT TO SEND IN: Web links or files. Submitted pieces must be in a digital format, regardless of your chosen medium. Submit visual and craft art pieces in .jpg or .gif format only. Individual file sizes should not exceed 800kB.

Acceptable file formats for written submissions include .txt, .rtf, .odt, .doc, or may be pasted directly into the body of your email. Entries will appear in the gallery as they're received.

Please include with your submission your full name, a short bio of four lines or less, and a brief artist's note explaining how your piece came to be, how you think it speaks to Chris's drawing, and how Chris's drawing speaks back to it. For visual and craft art submissions, please also include a short description of the materials used to create the work.

THE DEADLINE: Entries will be accepted beginning May 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011.
