Valya Dudycz Lupescu and Madeline C. Matz Inspire – The Spirit of Home
THIS CHALLENGE IS NOW CLOSED. Your generous donations this round helped us raise $100 for Great Lakes Bengal Rescue. Winners to be announced soon. Watch this space, and many thanks as always to our contributors for their continued support.
For this challenge, we invite you to respond to Valya’s words and Madeline’s art by getting to know a house spirit. It can be the spirit of your current or childhood home, a friend’s beloved residence, or a dwelling in your favorite film or novel. Draw a picture. Make a doll or poppet. Write a poem. Create a monologue. Transcribe the house spirit’s preferred recipe or offering. Photograph his or her favorite corner of the home. Share their stories.

“The Spirit of Home” is an introduction to a larger collaboration, a comic newly launched on Kickstarter by Valya and Madeline. Persons donating to Great Lakes Bengal Rescue between September 1st and October 31st will be entered into a random prize draw for a signed print of Madeline's artwork above. Valya and Madeline will (consult with their respective house spirits and) also select one art contributor to have a cameo in the comic, drawn into at least one panel of the story.
One last thing: be prepared, all this attention will probably make your house spirit very happy and may result in good fortune in unexpected ways.
THE RULES: The name of the game is collaborative conversation. We seek creative responses inspired by the piece, not derivative works. Only original artwork will be accepted. Any genre, medium, or form is fine, but it must be all your own work. No part, portion, or sample of "The Spirit of Home" may be used in your submitted piece; derivative works will be considered ineligible for submission.
WHERE TO SUBMIT: nightgardensubmissions@verizon.net
WHAT TO SEND IN: Web links or files. Submitted pieces must be in a digital format, regardless of your chosen medium. Submit visual and craft art pieces in .jpg or .gif format only. Individual file sizes should not exceed 800kB.
Acceptable file formats for written submissions include .txt, .rtf, .odt, .doc, or may be pasted directly into the body of your email. Entries will appear in the gallery as they're received.
Please include with your submission your full name, a short bio of four lines or less, and a brief artist's note explaining how your piece came to be, how you think it speaks to "The Spirit of Home", and how speaks back to it. For visual and craft art submissions, please also include a short description of the materials used to create the work.
THE DEADLINE: Entries will be accepted beginning September 1, 2011 through October 31, 2011.
THE CONTRIBUTOR CAMEO: One Spirit of Home Challenge contributor will be selected by Valya and Madeline. Artists' contributions must be submitted by October 31st to be eligible for a chance to appear in Valya and Madeline's Kickstarter comic.
